Due to the mandatory retirement age, Tore Schei has now resigned after having been Chief Justice of the Norwegian Supreme Court since 2002. Toril Marie Øie has been appointed new Chief Justice. She is the first female in Norwegian history to be Chief Justice. She took up her office on 1 March 2016.
Finding the person to replace Tore Schei has been an ongoing process since October of last year. Toril Marie Øie and seven others applied for the position as Lord Chief Justice.
Toril Marie Øie was born in 1960. She got her law degree in 1986 and started working at the Ministry of Justice after finishing her studies. Amongst other things, she has taught at the University of Oslo for many years, she has written several books and articles and she has been a judge in the Supreme Court since 2004.
